What's good to know about taking care of a sofa?
If your sofa is equipped with felt pads or casters for the legs, you have taken good care to protect the floor in the room from damage. That's a good solution, now let's take care of the rest.
How do you keep the color of your sofa upholstery?
Any fabric loses its original appearance over time, the color can lose its saturation, the pattern - contrast. It is inevitable and natural, but you can slow these processes down. The main impact on the appearance of fabrics have two factors - prolonged ultraviolet irradiation (invisible part of the sunlight) and prolonged heating. If you try to protect your sofa from direct sunlight, place it away from heating appliances and open flames, your sofa will retain its fresh color for a long time. This works equally well for sofas upholstered in fabric and leather.
What do you do to keep sofa cushions in volume and shape longer?
Sofa cushions inevitably deform during use. It would be a good idea to stuff the cushions tightly, returning them to their original shape when you are not using them. This will keep them in a pleasant condition for you. Cushions that lie loosely on the couch are useful to turn them over from time to time, changing places. This allows the load to be distributed more evenly and avoids unsightly local steady deformation, slows the wear and tear of the cushions, working in the most comfortable places for you to rest. If the cushions of your sofa are filled with feathers or down, their contents are placed in special thick bags. The gaskets of such bags are impermeable to down. It should be understood that the filler feathers have different sizes and stiffness. Sometimes some feathers may break through the fabric of the inner bag. This is a normal and natural process, don't worry if you notice it.
How do I deal with spillage stains?
Accidents are inevitable, it's part of life. The sooner you take action, the less the consequences will be. If you spilled something on the sofa, urgently blot the surface with a dry and clean cloth. Then it is advisable to dry the surface with a hair dryer. But you must be careful not to let the hair dryer touch the fabric and overheat it. It is better to choose a medium heat of the hair dryer. Try to keep it at least 30 cm from the fabric. Some liquids will either stain the fabric badly (red wine, pomegranate juice, for example) or are too thick to be removed with a dry cloth. If the stain cannot be removed, it is better to contact a professional.
What's the best way to clean a couch?
Dust can leave marks on the sofa upholstery that are very difficult to remove. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to clean with a vacuum cleaner. This should be done regularly and very carefully. If the dirt formed requires a more serious approach, it is better not to try to cope on their own. Local specialists will carry out all the necessary manipulations professionally and without risk to the upholstery, select cleaning agents for the specific situation and return your sofa to freshness and cleanliness.
Peculiarities of care of velvet upholstery of a sofa.
The pile gives velvet its special shine and charm. Its location in relation to the light determines the appearance of the surface. Sometimes a new velvet gives the impression of sloppy, crumpled or damaged. There is nothing to worry about. It is enough to run a few times over the velvet surface with a clothes brush. This action will fluff up the nap and arrange it neatly in one direction, the beautiful look will be returned.
The structure of velvet fabric is such that over time the pile will warp somewhat. This is a natural process for velvet. It belongs to what is known as antiquing, as do many other fabric alteration processes over time. It's not dangerous to velvet, it doesn't affect the longevity of the fabric.
Here are a few universal recommendations for the care of velvet furniture:
Iron velvet with a brush in the direction along the nap;
Velvet cushions need regular flipping and cleaning. It is best to use a clothes brush or a vacuum cleaner with a special upholstery nozzle for cleaning. If you don't have such a nozzle, an ordinary nozzle wrapped in a cloth will do. It is best to do this every week;
Any liquid that gets on the velvet surface should be wiped up quickly with a dry, clean cloth. The sooner this is done, the lower the risk of liquid stains that cannot be removed without a trace. In doing so, it is important not to press the stain deeper into the fabric. After you have removed most of the liquid with a dry cloth, gently dry the velvet with a hair dryer (remember the medium heat setting and a distance of at least 30 cm from the fabric!) When the velvet is dry, mat stains can easily be removed from the treated surface with a clothes brush or a special brush for velvet.
